Text compare

How to compare two versions of a text

Which box to use, how small changes and whitespace are shown, file limits, and what stays in your browser.

Start comparing

Put each version in the right box

Paste the earlier version into “Original text” and the later version into “Revised text”. If you mix them up, press “Swap texts” and compare again; removals and additions then switch sides.

Small changes are shown exactly

The comparison works on whole characters, including emoji and accented letters. A changed digit, particle, or punctuation mark gets its own region. Upper and lower case, Unicode forms (for example é written as one or two code points), line breaks, and spaces are not normalised, so they count as changes.

Example
  1. Line 2 October 20 October 22
  2. Line 3 ₩10,000 ₩12,000
  3. Line 3 available not available
  4. Line 3 until after

Examples are made up. They are not real events or prices.

Fix a paragraph and take the revised text

Select a change and press “Edit paragraph” to change that paragraph of the revised text in place. “Apply edit” replaces exactly that paragraph, keeps the original text unchanged, and compares again. Review marks are kept only for changes that are exactly the same after the edit; the others are cleared and you are told how many. “Take away” → “Copy revised text” or “Save revised text as TXT” gives the revised text exactly as it is now, without marks, labels or review state. These are available only when the comparison is up to date.

Ignoring whitespace differences

With “Ignore whitespace differences”, regions in which only spaces, tabs, or line breaks changed are hidden and counted. Regions where letters or other characters also changed stay visible. Zero-width characters are not treated as whitespace. Switch back to “Compare exactly” to see everything.

Hides differences in spaces, tabs, and line breaks. Original text is preserved.

Moved text

Moved text may appear as a removal and an addition.

Check phrases

Type a word, number or phrase to see how often it appears in each text and where. The search is exact: case, spaces and punctuation must match, and a match never splits a character such as an emoji. Overlapping matches are counted once, from left to right. It only shows where a phrase appears. It does not judge importance or meaning, and it does not change the list of changes, your review marks or the review record.

Review record

“Copy change & review record” and “Save change & review record as TXT” (under “Take away”) save a plain-text record of this comparison: the settings, how many changes you marked as checked, and for every change its mark, the words around it, its line numbers and the exact text before and after, each with its length. Hidden whitespace changes are listed too. The record is always complete, whatever you searched or opened on screen. Marks only record what you checked; they do not mean the text is correct or approved.

Limits and TXT files

Each box takes up to 100,000 characters, counted as Unicode code points. TXT files must be UTF-8 and at most 2 MiB. Long or heavily changed texts may take a few seconds; if a comparison cannot finish, your text stays in the boxes.

When you open a TXT file, one UTF-8 BOM at the very start is removed because it only marks the encoding. A BOM character elsewhere in the text, and anything you paste, is kept. Line breaks and Unicode forms are never changed.

When you paste or type, the browser stores line breaks as LF. To compare CRLF or CR line breaks exactly, open the TXT files instead.

Only plain text and UTF-8 TXT files are supported. Copy text from Word or PDF; formatting is not compared.

When to use a word processor instead

This tool compares plain text only. For formatting, tables, images, or comments in documents, the built-in compare feature of your word processor is a better fit. You can still copy the text of a document here to check wording.

Privacy

Your pasted text and results stay in this browser and are not uploaded. This workspace loads no third-party ads or analytics.

Text is not saved. Reloading or closing this tab clears it.

There is no account, no server storage, and no sharing link.

What this tool does not judge

Shows text differences. It does not judge meaning, correctness, or legal importance.
